One of the most unique features of Zabmo Ling is an area called the “Charnel Ground.” Though not a literal charnel ground, it is a symbolic one to enhance one’s practice, and it is particularly designed for practitioners of chöd in mind. In Vajrayana Buddhism, mandalas are envisioned as surrounded by frightening charnel grounds. They are places that scare you, and places of great spiritual transformation. Just like in a mandala, the Charnel Ground is located at the very edge of Zabmo Ling, quite far away from the cabin. One must actually go there to find out everything it contains, but please keep in mind:
•Use your wisdom to determine whether this type of area will benefit your practice.
•Use caution hiking down, it is very steep and can be challenging. Always wear hiking boots.
•Use extreme caution if venturing there at dawn, dusk, or night. Not only is it easy to trip and fall when it’s darker out, this is when predatory animals are most active. Always bring bear spray, and consider saving this area for daytime only, at least until you are very, very familiar with the land.
